day 2 :
Clay modelling Clay modelling competition was held on 21st of February 2014 in the evening of 5 o’clock at Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Light House Hill Road, Mangalore. Participants from all the years were seen today trying to give shape to their blocks of clay. The judges were Dr. Vijendra and Dr. Hitesh. One could feel the spark amongst the participants as well as the audience. Different teams presented various theme-based clay models.
Theme of Team Punk was Past Civilization and their tribute to it. They expressed their feelings in a traditional way. The model was an acknowledgment to the former king of Mysore, Late Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wodeyar.
“Today you can find many technologies that govern our life” was the theme of Team Raver. The point put forward by them was about no physical socialization among people. The team also pointed that technology was bad, in fact it brought people closer but not face-to-face.
As they say different minds, different thinking. Team Grunge gave all an excellent example through their clay model. Their theme being “It’s in your mind”. They conveyed about the miscellaneous perceptions of people and that if many people are given the same situation they would react in a different way.
Team Hippie presented a noble message “child labour is a crime, children are meant to learn not to earn” and the upbringing matters a lot in their character formation.
There are many people who desirously put their lives at stake for the country and for its residents. Team Goth’s theme was “the clock of a soldier’s life.” A soldier’s life is surrounded by weapons and warfare instead of normal hours missing out on luxuries. They depicted this message by means of a clay clock of a soldier’s life.
After seeing all the models, it was a tough job to decide the best amongst them. III prize was awarded to Team Raver. II prize was presented to Team Hippie and the I prize was awarded to Team Grunge. Congratulations and well done to all the teams who participated in this event and made it a success! - mohana bhoraskar (0'13)

painting “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life” so said Pablo Picasso. All the great artists of M.C.O.D.S, Mangalore, showcased their faith in what the great artist had once said, at the preclinical prosthodontics lab where this year’s painting competition had taken place on the 22nd of February. It started at 7:15 and lasted for an hour.
As the competition began, lines formed on paper which initially seemed to be just lines without a purpose and in some cases just an array of colours, slowly as more lines came together and as more colours were added the art behind it began to speak. Very different methods of painting were executed which included pencil drawing and then painting, painting by dabbing of spatula, dabbing with sponges, using strokes of a paint brush in many ways and of the sort. Whatever the methods followed each artwork was unique and beautiful in its own way. There were art works with messages against discriminating humans, child labour, rape, on respecting parents, on listening to one’s heart, on choosing to be different, a mother’s love, destruction of a once green forest and so on. Everybody gave their best and did full justice to their message though the skillful movement of the hand .And then there was art that was simple in concept yet complex in design like flowers in a vase, ballerina on a skating ring, a hill side view, a typical Indian beauty and abstract art. Yes indeed, the judges will have had a hard time to decide which one is the best. - GAYATHRI RAJEEV (0'12)

The goths and the grunges stood out as both the teams had a sizeable number of women folk promoting their products , the goths their red bull battery and the grunges their sting lungi, in this largely male dominated event . At last, but not the least, the broadcast of the fantasy Hawaii chappal performed by the ravers. All the groups definitely managed to charge up the youthful hormones with their successful and highly illustrative marketing technique. The night ended joyously as Dr. Mahesh and Dr. Junaid Ahmed announced the winners with endless cheering from the winning batches. COLLAGE MAKING One could witness at least 30 people on 23rd February 2014 at 1 pm in the Preclinical prosthodontics lab at Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Light House Hill Road, Mangalore, creating an art-form with the help of clippings from newspapers and magazines on the themes – (i) Evolution and Devolution and (ii) The Paradox of Mankind. The participants could be seen working frantically for an hour, finding appropriate pictures from different sources to fit the themes. The judges present were Dr. Umesh Pai, Dr. Mahesh CP and Dr. Ritesh.
The collage presented by Team 1 was on the basis of “evolution of fashion, medicine and food”. The evolution of fashion was shown as the difference in the colors and types of clothes, of medicine was according to the researches going on but that leading to founding and occurrence of many diseases. Food evolution was depicted as the enhancement in the food quality.
Team 2 gave a 3D effect to their collage. It showed the difference between how earth should be and how it has become due to the reckless activities of man. Because of the ever-changing life of man the earth is burning and the end result is not good. It causes devolution.
The topic that team 3 chose was “Evolution and devolution”. The collage depicted that even though people are moving towards evolution but there are still some things that pull us back us back towards devolution. For example, even though there are cars it causes pollution, traffic and thus devolution.
Team 4 showed “evolution and devolution” in term of hand up and hand down. Hand up meant evolution – education, health, good food, etc, while hand down meant devolution – corruption, evil, harassment cases, etc. it portrayed that even though there is good on one side but still there are many evils on the other.
“The paradox of womankind”, was indeed a beautiful topic chosen by Team 5. The message conveyed as through the eye of a lady. It showed fire in iris which was an analogue for the internal stresses and social problems of a lady. But still she expresses herself only in terms of tears. It shows a beautiful combination of fire and water both in the same picture for the problems and the expressions of a lady.
Team 6 showed us “the paradox of mankind” via a see-saw, on one side of which represents good while the other is for bad. It shows how the good things in our life such as family, love, friendship, health and culture, are slowly turning into the evils of the society such as addiction, desire, unhealthy competition and terror.
Team 7 gave a stunning picture of “the paradox of mankind” by showing us a difference between rich and poor and war and peace. The message delivered also showed us that even though today woman is working and earning her own but still she is not given credit for what she is doing. The society is still unsafe for these women and so they are stuck in their houses.
Using the science of coordinate geometry to show “evolution and devolution” was a wonderful effort made by Team 8. The thing to be noted was that even though there are so many skyscrapers now but still women is at risk, that there are many places full of greenery but still big cities lack the trees and environment. That even though there is evolution but it has led to some devolution as well.
Team 9 gave us a captivating picture of “2014 – power of the new generation”. The point was to show the power of a common man, that how things like democracy and woman empowerment can change the society. It indicated how the right kind of evolution can prevent devolution.
There is a need to have a healthy balance between “evolution and devolution”, was the idea presented by Team 10, by means of showing that evolution such as energy, education, hope and work has to have a healthy relation with devolution such as war, destruction, negativity and terror. The solution for this problem is only through revolutionary resolution.
At the end it was pretty hard for the respective judges to decide the best among them. The winners came out as follows – III position – Interns and PGs. II position – Batch of 2012. I position – Batch of 2010. - mohana bhoraskar (0'13)
pot pouri 23rd February, the 4th day of the Dental Week was a blend of art, enacting and guessing skills. Yes, we are talking about the prompt and fun loving event of Pot pourri which is a mixture of Pictionary, Tom Dick & Harry and Dumb Charade. It was handled exceptionally well under the guidance of the judge Dr Vishwas & was held on the Rooftop of lighthouse campus commencing at 3pm. There was a significant amount of adrenaline rush amongst all MCODS batches having 3 participants each. “Dumb Charade” principally involved to act out words, objects, movies, etc. without pointing at related things such as color, numbers, and objects. “Pictionary” is an interesting drawing-guessing game where one person explains a given word with the help of drawings whereas “Tom, Dick and Harry” involved 1 participant drawing, 2nd acting and the 3rd person guessing. There were 6 rounds keeping the struggle on till the last moment. 1st round was a culmination of all 3 games which started off and ended with a quick burst of energy. 2nd round was a intermix of skillful artist, a mum actor & a spontaneous guesser. The 3rd round or DUMDUM round was a chaotic episode where one of each teams had to mount a Hindi movie onto other contestants who had to guess all the movies in 45secs. Whoa, it was difficult for the eyes to settle on one single contestant. The players had to know “How the world spreads” in the 4th round where they had to draw & explain the names of countries with their location. It was an absolute ‘grab the opportunity’ round as it was a buzzer round! The 5th round was a stirring and scoring round where the names of famous personalities had to be speculated by just asking questions with prompt answers of either YES or NO. The last round was nail biting as it was the last chance for the participants to grab prizes with bumper points. One player had to act out 10 random words with increasing difficulty but all starting with same initials to fellow mates. All in all it was a thrilling event with stiff competition. With lots of hooting and bursts of laughter from the audience and contestants, the eventful evening ended with a clear lead by the Goths. The Hippies being the most energetic stood 2nd while the craving ravers bagged 3rd price fighting till the end. - Aastha Todi (0'13)
